Koh Samui

Koh Samui, situated off the East coast in Southern Thailand, is the largest of an archipelago of more than 80 islands with a surface area of about 250 square kilometers; it is the third largest island of the Kingdom after Phuket and Koh Chang.

Discovered in the early 1970s by backpackers when there were only huts without electricity and tap water, and a population which lived mainly on the fishing and coconut plantations. Presently, Koh Samui still sends more than 2 million coconuts per month to Bangkok.

A Tropical island lined with coconut palms with white sandy beaches, Samui is connected several times a day by boats and planes. On Koh Samui there is delicious food, tropical vegetation, waterfalls, idyllic beaches, Buddhist temples and breath-taking views. Samui counts a population of about 40,000 Thais, mainly Buddhists with a minority of Muslims. Life on Koh Samui is relaxing, the Thais are passive natural people, very patient and visitors feel at their ease. Smiling is the universal language even though sometimes we have some difficulties understanding each other.

On the island you will find a whole range of hotel's, villa's and bungalow's to suit all budgets, from the simple wooden bungalow with a thatched roof on the beach to the international hotel's and Spa's to Exclusive villa's.

The two longest beaches of the island are Chaweng beach and Lamai beach, they also prove most popular. One of the most beautiful beaches of the island is in Lamai, it is nice and quiet to relax with great restaurants and bars on the beach. It's more concentrated with its own charm.

There are many lively activities to do on Koh Samui, water-sports, frisbee-golf, football-golf, jungle canopy, quad biking, paint ball, tenpin bowling, elephant trekking, snorkeling, scuba diving, freshwater fishing and more.

If you are a little less adventurous you can relax at a spa, get a massage on the beach, drive to the view points of Koh Samui, visit one of the many zoo's Crocodile zoo, Tiger zoo, Snake farm, Butterfly garden, or even see the Monkey show, Thai cooking lessons, go to the cinema, or visit one of the many Tailors to get a custom made outfit.

The nightlife on Koh Samui is very broad there are the Cabaret shows, Live music, Traditional Thai dancers, Thai boxing, many bars and restaurants and night clubs.

If you look for tranquility, go toward Lamai. Big Buddha and Maenam also have beaches with views of Koh Samui's sister island Koh Phan-Ngan, which can be reached in just one hour from Bang Rak pier (near Big Buddha).

Internet cafes are located generously around the Island by the beaches and tourist spots, almost all the tour/travel agents offer an internet access as well. Wireless access in major areas of Samui is now available.

Getting here is easy - just a sixty minute flight from Bangkok, but literally a world away from the action packed streets of the capital city.

Lamai

Lamai Beach is by far the trendiest place on the island and has much better bars and restaurants than Chaweng. Nowadays Lamai is comparatively quiet. A laid back kind of place which offers either parties to the early hours or a quiet drink at many of our great bars and restaurants.

Located on a cozy corner in the south of the island, One of Samui's major beaches is still small enough to comfortably walk around the town in an evening and find a variety of eateries and entertainment venues. With weekly events like the very popular girl Thai boxing and cabaret show supplementing the usual attractions.

The long perfect white sand and crystal clear water of the beach itself remains magnificent and is considered by many to be the finest on the island. It is also lined by a wide range of accommodation and entertainment options.
Lamai is 45 minutes from the airport.

Taling Ngam

The area of Taling Ngam is situated at the southern point of Koh Samui. It features the most secluded bays on the island. The short and secluded beach here is completely palm lined. To the south is the large coconut covered mountain, which marks the end of the bay. This secluded beach is only 15 minutes from Lamai.

Phang-ka Bay also known as Emerald cove is private, isolated and secluded. The water here is quiet shallow and calm. A perfect bay for playing in the sea. The view from the beach is to the west which offers an outstanding view of the sunsets. In the distance are the five islands pointing in the direction of the mainland. Bring your camera when visiting this secret location.
Taling Ngam is 60 minutes from the airport.

Bangrak/Big Buddha

Bangrak is often called 'Big Buddha Beach' because of the huge Buddha image at the eastern end of the beach that looks particularly impressive at sunset. Big Buddha Beach is located in the Northeast corner of Samui. It gets its name for the view of the Big Golden Buddha, beginning in Bophut village extending down to the Big Buddha shrine. The beach here is dotted with bungalows and restaurants and a couple of bars and shops along the road.

Although the beach is quite narrow, it is very quiet and fringed with palm trees along its two-kilometer stretch. The waters are calm if somewhat shallow. Three piers are located in Bangrak which is scheduled to take trips to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. There are also several places where speedboat services are available.

The Big Buddha is twelve-meters tall, it is also the home to many Monks; it is respectful not to point your feet toward a monk. Most days it is possible to receive a Buddhist blessing from a monk; for a small donation. You can also leave you mark here by buying a block for a small donation and sign it these blocks and donations are used to improve the Temple.
The Big Buddha is the focal point of the area even though there is no town as such nearby. Within the temple grounds there are shops and restaurants. The Big Buddha complex opens early and closes at sunset each day.

Bangrak is 5 minutes from the airport.

Bophut

Located on the north of the island between Maenam and Big Buddah Beach is another one of Samui's beaches. Bophut is also one of Samui's more established settlements. It remains a charming fishing village that has changed very little over the years. Today, Bophut attracts many young couples and families. Several of the old wooden seafront shop houses have been transformed into delightful restaurants, keeping Bophut's character intact. Other shop houses continue to operate as they have for years, serving the local residents and fishermen.

Bophut Beach offers some three kilometers of smooth white sand. The narrow beach road leads from the pier westward past resorts, restaurants and local shops. At night this area is known for its charming and romantic atmosphere.
Bophut is 5/10 minutes from the airport.

Choeng-Mon

Choeng Mon is made up of a series of bays on the north-western tip of the island, again the beaches are lovely with warm clear waters. The accommodation is mostly exclusive 5* resorts predominantly European couples stay in this area many of them honeymooners. This is reflected in the food and entertainment on offer in many of the resorts' restaurants. So don't expect the Thai cuisine served to be too spicy and do expect traditional Thai dancing and numerous Filipino bands expertly playing covers of Western pop standards.

A big advantage for anyone traveling with children, is that the resorts are all built on substantial grounds and therefore have all got much bigger swimming pools than can generally be found elsewhere on the island. Cheap accommodation, on the other hand, is virtually non-existent in Choeng Mon.
Choeng Mon is 15 minutes from the airport

Maenam

Situated on the north of the island, Maenam has some great bars and hotels/resorts in the area, most have good night-time entertainment options which are sure to keep you up till late.

Sunset cruises are a very popular option. Maenam has one of the islands more secluded and private beaches. You'll find smooth powdery sands and calm clear waters perfect for swimming. Diving and windsurfing centers are located in Maenam.

Maenam also has a World Class Golf Course "Santiburi" The Clubhouse has amazing views of the island and the neighboring islands. The Bangkok Airways Open 2006 was held here.

Maenam is located 15 minutes from the airport.

Chaweng

Chaweng has sprung up to be the busiest, noisiest most commercial part of the island over the last decade. Chaweng Beach was the most popular of the island. Chaweng was the Heart of the night life with bars and restaurants catering to every taste and budget. From beach side restaurants to sophisticated cocktail bars, Chaweng's nightlife offers lots of choice.

Chaweng has shops from the well known retailers as Adidas, Quicksilver, Benetton and Boots, plus local shops selling Clothes, Accessories and Souvenirs, note that in most of these shops you are expected to barter the price down, usually by calculator, most tourists really dislike barter. A tip is to go to one third the price they ask from you and work slowly up from there to half the price first quoted, if you walk away they will not let you go if it is a good price for them, as they need to make profit to live too.

Chaweng is 15 minutes from the airport

Tesco Lotus

Tesco Lotus is on Chaweng Ring Road the biggest supermarket on Koh Samui, in here there are extra stores inside; Boots, Adidas, Homepro and hairdressers, Restaurants and more.

Also there is a bowling alley, Karaoke rooms, and a Cinema.
